Weekly Toolbox Talk: Shortcuts

All of us have exposed ourselves to possible injury by taking shortcuts when a few extra seconds would have meant doing something the safe way. Tech Breakthrough: Lockheed Martin Opens Advanced Bioenergy Plant

New System to Convert Waste into Clean Power for the Lockheed Martin Facility in Owego, New York

OWEGO, New York, Sept. 20, 2016 – Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) opened a new bioenergy facility in Owego, New York, at a ribbon cutting ceremony today. The system, which is now completing commissioning, uses Concord Blue’s advanced technology that will convert waste into clean, renewable energy.

“This new bioenergy technology can change the way our world addresses clean energy and waste management challenges,” said Frank Armijo, vice president of Lockheed Martin Energy.  “At our bioenergy facility in Owego, we’re able to reduce our own energy costs while also demonstrating the groundbreaking capability of our technology to potential users.”

How It Works

This self-sustaining system can transform waste into electricity through a process called advanced gasification. There are four key steps in the process:

  • Waste Collection: Wood-waste, municipal solid waste, industrial waste and more can be collected and used as input. The Owego facility will initially use wood-waste, with plans to transition to municipal, commercial or industrial waste to create its power in the future.
  • Waste Conditioning: Metal, glass and other materials are removed, and the waste is dried to specification.
  • Gas Creation: Proprietary heat carrier spheres are heated and mixed in with the organic waste. Once a certain temperature is reached, the solid waste turns into gas, which then travels to a reforming vessel where the gas is turned into synthesis gas (syngas).
  • Power Generation: The syngas is then used to fuel a combustion engine that produces electricity. Alternatively, the syngas can also be used to produce hydrogen and biofuels.

Unlike incineration, the process is oxygen-free and flame-free, which means no harmful byproducts are produced, emissions are limited and waste going to landfills is greatly reduced.

What’s Next

Building off experience gained during development of the Owego facility, Lockheed Martin and Concord Blue recently began construction on a bioenergy plant in Herten, Germany. The facility will convert 50,000 tons of feedstock per year into 5 megawatts of energy output, enough to power about 5,000 local homes and businesses.

Concord Blue’s unique technology benefits the environment, fulfilling all international, Environmental Protection Agency and European regulations for renewable energy and air emissions. Concord Blue operates globally, with offices in the United States, Germany and India.

Lockheed Martin Energy is a line of business within Lockheed Martin that delivers comprehensive solutions across the energy industry to include demand response solutions, energy efficiency, energy storage, nuclear systems, ocean energy technologies and bioenergy generation.

Tata-Lockheed Martin Joint Venture Delivers 50th C-130J Super Hercules Empennage

HYDERABAD, India, Sept. 19, 2016 – The 50th C-130J Super Hercules empennage assembly was delivered by Tata Lockheed Martin Aerostructures Limited (TLMAL) on Sept. 16. TLMAL is a joint venture between Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) and Lockheed Martin Aeroframe Corporation located here.

TLMAL was established in 2010, with production of C-130J Super Hercules airframe components beginning in late 2011. TLMAL not only exemplifies the Government of India’s “Make in India” objectives, but it has the distinction of being the single global source of C-130J empennage assemblies included on all new Super Hercules aircraft produced in Marietta, Georgia, in the United States of America.

Empennage assemblies produced by TLMAL include the aircraft’s horizontal and vertical stabilizers along with leading edges and tip assemblies. The TLMAL team also has manufactured 28 sets of C-130J center wing box components that include the front and rear beam assemblies, formers and trailing edge sections.

“It is a moment of great pride and honor for TLMAL, our joint venture with Lockheed Martin, as it delivers the 50th empennage. The joint venture has been a great example of successful U.S. ̶ India Industrial partnership and a testimony to Lockheed Martin’s and Tata’s intent of developing aerospace manufacturing in India,” said S. Ramadorai, TASL chairman. “I congratulate the Operations team that has ensured all deliveries ahead of schedule to our customer and partner. I am certain that this performance will go a long way in extending our partnership to a new level and help TASL achieve its vision to become the partner of choice for global original equipment manufacturers.”

The C-130J Super Hercules is the proven standard in tactical airlift, providing a unique mix of versatility and performance to complete any mission, anytime, anywhere. It is the current variant of the C-130 Hercules, which has been in production for more than 60 years. More than 2,500 C-130s (legacy models and C-130Js) have been delivered to 63 customers currently operating out of 68 countries. The Indian Air Force operates a fleet of five C-130J-30s and has ordered an additional six Super Hercules.

“As the world’s workhorse, the C-130J Super Hercules is counted on to support missions other airlifters simply cannot do. Quality and reliability are the C-130J’s hallmark and we rely on our suppliers to maintain those attributes. The TLMAL team does exactly this with the empennages and center wing components it manufactures,” said George Shultz, vice president and general manager, Air Mobility & Maritime Missions at Lockheed Martin. “Every empennage we receive from TLMAL is a direct reflection of its team’s dedication to and focus on quality. This milestone is one of many we plan to celebrate with TLMAL and its employees, who literally help the C-130J soar to great heights.”

To date, all 50 empennages and 28 center wing box components have been delivered on or ahead of schedule.

”Our team continues to demonstrate outstanding performance against all of our safety, quality, and schedule and cost metrics,” said Bob Owenby, Lockheed Martin’s Chief Operating Officer for TLMAL. “We could not ask for a better Indian partner in this venture. TASL’s unwavering commitment to success and world-class vision is very impressive and the core of our joint venture success.”

The C-130J Super Hercules worldwide fleet has more than 1.5 million flight hours to its credit and is flown by 19 different operators. For additional information, visit http://ift.tt/1o65h7P.

Lockheed Martin-Led Team Launches Future USS WICHITA

MARINETTE, Wis., Sept. 17, 2016 – The Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT)-led industry team launched the 13th Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) into the Menominee River at the Fincantieri Marinette Marine shipyard on Sept. 17.

Ship sponsor, Kate Lehrer, christened LCS 13, the future USS Wichita, in Navy tradition by breaking a champagne bottle across the ship's bow just prior to the launch.

“It is an honor and privilege to serve as the sponsor of the future USS Wichita and to be a part of this major milestone in the ship’s journey towards joining the great U.S. Navy fleet,” Lehrer said. “I look forward and to an ongoing relationship with Wichita’s future crews and their families throughout the ship’s service.”

LCS 13 will undergo additional outfitting and testing at Fincantieri Marinette Marine before the ship’s anticipated delivery next year.

“The christening and launch of LCS 13 marks an important step in her journey towards joining the fleet,” said Joe North, vice president of Littoral Ships and Systems. “The Freedom-variant LCS plays a critical role in the U.S. Navy’s maritime security strategy, and we are committed to getting LCS 13 and her highly capable sister ships into combatant commanders’ hands as quickly as possible.”

The Lockheed Martin-led industry team is currently in full-rate production of the Freedom-variant, with six ships under construction at Fincantieri Marinette Marine and three more in long-lead material procurement. The ship’s design and open architecture allows the Navy to rapidly acquire and deploy a fleet of highly flexible and capable ships at a fraction of the cost of other platforms.

First Lockheed Martin GMLRS Alternative Warhead Rolls Off Assembly Line

DALLAS, Sept. 12, 2016 – The first Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS) Alternative Warhead rocket has rolled off the production line at Lockheed Martin’s (NYSE: LMT) Camden, Arkansas, manufacturing facility.

The GMLRS Alternative Warhead was designed to engage the same target set and achieve the same area-effects requirement as the old MLRS submunition warheads, but without the lingering danger of unexploded ordnance.

“GMLRS Alternative Warhead rockets are all-weather, time-critical, rapidly deployable guided munitions that return precision area-effects capability to the battlefield commander,” said Ken Musculus, vice president of Tactical Missiles at Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control. “This first GMLRS Alternative Warhead round coming off our Camden Operations production line represents another example of Lockheed Martin’s commitment to constantly evolve the MLRS family of munitions to meet the ever-changing requirements of our customers.”

Fully compliant with international treaties banning submunition weapons, the GMLRS Alternative Warhead rocket will allow all users of the MLRS to have an area-effects weapon in their inventories without the need to procure additional launcher systems. MLRS rockets with submunition warheads ended production approximately six years ago.

Lockheed Martin received the initial production contract from the U.S. Army for GMLRS Alternative Warheads in June 2015. Each GMLRS Alternative Warhead rocket will be packaged in an MLRS launch pod and will be fired from the Lockheed Martin HIMARS or M270 family of launchers.

Lockheed Martin has produced more than 25,000 GMLRS rockets at its facility in Camden, which has received more than 60 awards over the last decade, including the 2012 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award and the Shingo Silver Medallion Award for Operation Excellence.

Lockheed Martin Recognized as Best-in-Class on Dow Jones Sustainability Index

Bethesda, Md., September 8, 2016 – For the third year in a row, the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI) has recognized Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] as best-in-class in the area of corporate sustainability. This distinction is only given to the top 10 percent of the largest 2,500 companies in the S&P Global Broad Market Index based on long-term environmental, social and economic benchmarks. Lockheed Martin is the only North American prime defense contractor included on the World Index.

“We are proud to earn the highest score in our industry. Thinking sustainably is thinking strategically,” said Leo S. Mackay, Jr., senior vice president of Internal Audit, Ethics and Sustainability for Lockheed Martin. “Connecting core issues from our Sustainability Management Plan with our business model is why we continue to grow as a global leader in innovation and perform with excellence.”

Sustainable thinking is driving performance at Lockheed Martin, which is demonstrated by the Corporation’s recently announced Sustainability Management Plan. This strategic approach includes five core issues: product impact, employee well-being, resource efficiency, information security and business integrity.

The Plan lists specific targets and reaffirms Lockheed Martin’s commitment to building a more sustainable future for its customers, its business and the planet. For example, the Corporation has an ambitious goal to help its energy customers reduce their carbon emissions by at least twice the carbon impact of its business operations by 2020. Additionally, measured against a 2010 baseline, Lockheed Martin also increased efficiencies and reduced its environmental footprint through the end of 2015:

  • Energy use: down 18%
  • Water use: down 25%
  • Carbon emissions: down 23%

Lockheed Martin Fighting Spirit Scholarship for Injured and Disabled Veterans

FORT WORTH, Texas, Sept. 6, 2016 – Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) today announced a scholarship to aid wounded warriors of the United States armed services.

The Lockheed Martin Fighting Spirit Scholarship provides sports and physical activity programs for wounded veterans, with the honorees introduced as part of the Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl activities Dec. 23 in Fort Worth.

Lockheed Martin is sponsoring scholarships for two veterans, one for flying and the second for sailing, through two world-famous programs. The flying scholarship is conducted through Able Flight, an organization providing flight and aviation career training for people with a variety of physical disabilities, including wounded and disabled veterans. The sailing scholarship is conducted through the Warrior Sailing Program, which is dedicated to providing sailing certification and education for wounded, ill and injured U.S. military service members.

“The Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl is dedicated to the brave men and women who have made great sacrifices to defend the United States and our allies,” said Orlando Carvalho, executive vice president, Lockheed Martin Aeronautics. “We are honored to work with Able Flight and Warrior Sailing Program to give back to the armed forces community, and provide two veterans with an enriching, unforgettable experience of a lifetime.”

After successful completion of Able Flight’s six-week flight school, held at Purdue University’s Department of Aviation Technology, the flying scholarship recipient will receive a call sign, earn a pilot’s license and receive his or her wings at the EAA AirVenture Oshkosh airshow in July 2017.

"It's especially gratifying to be working with Lockheed Martin, and we are extremely proud to have them join with Able Flight in continuing our long history of providing wounded warriors with life-changing experiences,” said Charles Stites, Able Flight's executive director.

The sailing scholarship recipient receives a nationally recognized Basic Keelboat Sailing Certification after successful completion of the Warrior Sailing Program’s Basic and Advanced Training programs.

"We are excited to partner with Lockheed Martin, a company that supports wounded warriors as much as we do, to help fulfill our mission,” said Ben Poucher, program director at Warrior Sailing Program. “This scholarship program provides a unique opportunity for a service member to not only be introduced to sailing, but earn a sailing certification they can enjoy for life.”

Able Flight and Warrior Sailing Program will each select one candidate for the Lockheed Martin Fighting Spirit Scholarship from the pool of applicants who apply through their respective websites.

Lockheed Martin Delivers 2,000th JASSM to the U.S. Air Force

ORLANDO, Fla., Sept. 6, 2016 – Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) recently delivered the 2,000th Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile (JASSM®) to the U.S. Air Force.

Completed under the 12th production lot, the 2,000th missile is a baseline JASSM. Lot 12, which began production in January 2016, includes 150 baseline JASSM cruise missiles and 60 JASSM-Extended Range (ER) missiles.

“U.S. and allied warfighters rely on JASSM and JASSM-ER missiles as vital capabilities in their short- and long-term strategic defense plans,” said Jason Denney, program director of Long-Range Strike Systems at Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control. “JASSM and JASSM-ER are the only long-range, all-weather, stealthy cruise missiles capable of defeating high value, well-defended current and future threats.”

Recent program milestones include a $116 million contract option for JASSM-ER and a contract from the U.S. Air Force to support additional integration of JASSM onto the Polish Air Force F-16C/D aircraft.

Armed with a penetrating blast-fragmentation warhead, JASSM and JASSM-ER can be used in all weather conditions. They share the same powerful capabilities and stealth characteristics, though JASSM-ER has more than two-and-a-half times the range of JASSM for greater standoff distance. These cruise missiles employ an enhanced digital anti-jam GPS receiver and infrared seeker to dial into specific points on targets.

Effective against high-value, well-fortified, fixed and relocatable targets, JASSM is integrated on the U.S. Air Force’s B-1B, B-2, B-52, F-16 and F-15E. The B-1B also carries JASSM-ER. Internationally, JASSM is carried on the F/A-18A/B and the F-18C/D aircraft. Produced at the company’s manufacturing facility in Troy, Alabama, more than 2,700 JASSM missiles have been ordered through Lot 14.
